Swedish Meatballs

Move over IKEA... lean, beefy deliciousness.

 

Ingredients

Meatballs

  • 3/4 cup fresh breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup minced onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 1/2 lbs Highland ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp minced parsley

Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 whipping cream
  • salt & pepper

  • mashed potatoes
  • fresh parsley (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Place in the breadcrumbs in a bowl.

Melt the butter in a saucepan, add onion, garlic, salt, pepper, allspice and cook until soft. Add the milk and Worcestershire sauce and bring up to a simmer. Pour this mixture over the breadcrumbs, mix & cool.

Preheat the oven the oven to 400F. Add the beef, egg and parsley to the breadcrumbs and mix. Roll into 1 inch meatballs and bake on a lined cookie sheet for about 25 minutes.

Melt the butter and add the flour to make a roux, stirring until smooth. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer. Add the cream and meatballs.Turn down the heat to medium-low and simmer until thick, about 8-10 minutes. Season with salt & pepper.

Serve on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes and garnish with parsley.
